RARE FELT SUFFRAGETTE SASH WITH "VOTES FOR WOMEN" TEXT, 1910-1920:
Suffragette sash made from yellow felt, with black-printed text that reads: "Votes for Women". Suffragette sashes are particularly scarce and sought-after. Often they are clipped so that two lengths of fabric can be sold to collectors, each with a slogan. Full length examples are seldom encountered. This one survives in excellent condition.
Golden yellow was the customary color of the suffrage movement in America, coupled with a variety of subordinate colors, primarily black on felt textiles. Violet and green were the traditional colors of the women's movement in England.
Mounting: The sash has been folded in a three-dimensional fashion to enhance its presentation. Archival mylar was used inside the folds for support. The textile was then hand-stitched to a background of 100% cotton twill, black in color, which was washed to reduce excess dye. An acid-free agent was added to the wash to further set the dye and the fabric was heat-treated for the same purpose. The mount was then placed in a modern frame with a finish that is very dark brown, nearly black, with red with a red undertone and highlights. A shadow box was created to accommodate the folds. The glazing is U.V. protective Plexiglas.
Condition: There is very minor soiling, but there are no serious condition issues. |
