Description....:
46 star American national parade flag, printed on silk, bound at the top and bottom with machine stitching in matching red thread. The flag was probably made by Cheney Silk in Manchester, Connecticut, based upon its fabric, size, and color, with respect to other known examples that I am familiar with. In the late 19th century, Cheney was the largest silk manufacturer in the United States.

The stars of the flag are configured in staggered rows of 8-7-8-8-7-8, which is typical of this star count. Note how the stars in the first row are canted slightly to the right, with one point in the 1:00 position, followed by the next, with the stars canted slightly to the left, with one point directed at roughly 11:00, alternating back and forth throughout. Note the somewhat bulbous profile of the stars, which are especially attractive.

Oklahoma joined the Union as the 46th state on November 16th, 1907, during Teddy Roosevelt’s presidency. Roosevelt had many friends in the Oklahoma Territory from his Rough Rider days and pushed it through to statehood. The 46 star flag became official on July 4th, 1908 and remained so until July 3rd, 1912. Many 46 star flags were made earlier, however, in great anticipation of the future addition of the state, which had previously been appointed to Native Americans.

Mounting: The textile was mounted and framed within our own conservation department, which is led by expert trained staff. We take great care in the mounting and presentation of flags and have preserved thousands of examples.

The background is 100% cotton, black in color, that has been washed and treated for colorfastness. The mount was placed in a modern, step-down profile molding, very dark brown in color, almost black, with reddish overtones and highlights, to which a flat profile molding, with a finish like old gunmetal, was added as a liner. The glazing is U.V. protective acrylic (Plexiglas).

Condition: There are horizontal splits in the last row of stars, toward the fly end of the canton, in the red stripe beyond it, and in the white stripe below. There is a very minor stain in the white stripe below the canton, and extremely minor occurrences elsewhere. There is a pinprick-sized hole near the fly end of the 3rd white stripe. The colors are excellent.
