RED AND BLACK CHECKERBOARD WITH SHADOWED GOLD SCROLLWORK, CA 1840-1870:
This diminutive folding checkerboard was found in New England and probably can be attributed to Vermont or New Hampshire. The primary colors are traditional in black and red, and the polychrome paint has a fine craquelured surface. The best part of the board, however, can be found in its fanciful, shadowed scrollwork border. Note how the flur-de-lis raise the quality of this example significantly. Painted on two planks, with two brass hinges.
Condition: Very good, expected wear. |
