VERY RARE BANNERETTE WEATHERVANE WITH A BUILT-IN SPINNER, CA 1880-1900:
A form of this unusual bannerette weathervane, with its diamond-shaped double tail and scrollwork profile, and rare built-in, twisted spinner, is pictured in the 19th century catalogues of at least two New York City-based weathervane makers, Fiske and Westervelt, but I have never seen one in person. The Fiske and Westervelt examples are nearly identical, which isn't surprising as the copying of designs was ramped, but both are shown with molded copper tips and neither with this bold, shapely, iron arrowhead.
Past the rare spinner and the fact that it is somewhat breathtakingly beautiful, the best thing about this example is its outstanding gilded and verdigris surface, unaltered and untouched. The post is worn through at the bottom and part way up, displaying is age and obvious long-term use with just the right amount of grace that collectors wish to see. The upper diamond on the tail was shot, but the bullet didn't go through. This is further evidence of authenticity, as the authentic verdigris runs over the indentation.
A great addition to any weathervane collection.
Condition: Very fine overspray of red paint on one side, only detectable on close inspection. Dent from bullet in top of tail. |
