RARE BANNERETTE WEATHERVANE WITH A BUILT-IN SPINNER, 1880-1890's
Dimensions (inches): 23" tall x 47.5" long x 4" deep
Description:
RARE BANNERETTE WEATHERVANE WITH A BUILT-IN SPINNER, 1880-1890's:

Bannerette weathervane with a rare built-in spinner, an elaborate scrollwork profile, and a diamond-shaped double tail. Made of sheeted copper and copper tubing, with a hammered copper ball and flared arrowhead, it was produced sometime during the last quarter of the 19th century. Similar examples are pictured in the catalogues of at least two New York City-based weathervane makers, Fiske and Westervelt.

Past the presence of the spinner and the fact that the vane is sculpturally beautiful, the best thing about this example is its outstanding verdigris surface. The post is worn through in places, displaying its age and obvious long-term use with just the right amount of grace that collectors wish to see.

A great addition to any weathervane collection.

Condition: The center post is worn through in a couple of locations. At some point in its lifetime, the attachment of the lowest piece of scrollwork was reinforced with a small rectangle of copper sheeting. This was soldered around the post and also served as a repair to the post itself. Mount: There is presently a white-painted, iron wall mount that allows the vane to be displayed on a wall. We employ an expert metal worker on staff and can manufacture a shelf mount or practically any sort of other mount that you wish if this is unsuitable.
