35 star American National Parade Flag of the Civil War period. Bears an eagle in the midst of a wreath of stars, flanked by 3 smaller stars in each corner. This is beautiful example and the presence of eagles in parade flags is extremely rare. Flags with great folk design and of Civil War vintage are among the most highly desired forms of the American Stars and Stripes, and this is simply one of the best parade examples you can ever own. Fewer than ten flags like it are known to have survived.
The presence of the eagle in the canton of our nation?s flag is represented in the very earliest Colonial designs. At times the eagle was simply included as an important American symbol. At other times it was worked into the design of flags as a means of striking or expressing peace with certain Native American tribes, to whom the eagle was an important totem.
West Virginia was admitted into the Union as our 35th state on June 20th, 1863, and the 35 star flag was used during the closing two years of the Civil War.
Mounting: Although the flag is not currently mounted, the price includes conservation of the flag in an early frame behind u.v. protective glass or plexiglas.
Condition: There is moderate fading in the stripes and minor fading in the canton, accompanied by some foxing and staining. The condition is well-warranted by the extreme scarcity and great desirability of the flag. |
