This exceptional American quilt, in a variant of honeycomb stars, is comprised of a white cotton ground with floating assemblages of 6-pointed stars in groups of 7, with a single, red star in the center, made of solid, plain red cotton, and groups of 6 around it, made of blue calico. There is a red, white, and blue calico border and the back is of the same white cotton used on the front. All of the piecework is by machine and the quilting is done by hand. Made circa 1890-1910, the visual impact is riveting and the aesthetics are very modern, which is a very interesting feature for an object of this period. I’d call this “as good as it gets” in terms of its combination of bold display and patriotic design. American, probably northeast, likely Pennsylvania.
Condition: Professionally laundered. Excellent. |
