Boxing gloves and the names of the candidates for President of the United States are the centerpiece of this extremely rare Ronald Reagan vs. Walter Mondale debate poster, promoted with the byline: “The Main Event.” Sponsored by the League of Women Voters, text along the lower register reads as follows:

Kansas City Welcomes You To:
A Celebration of American Democracy
Kansas City Presidential Debate
October 21, 1984 – Municipal Auditorium

Printing: Constable Hodgins Printing Co., Inc. * League of Women Voters * Photography: R.C. Nibble

This, the second debate between the two men, is the event where Reagan was confronted about his age by Henry Trehwitt (1927-2003), Diplomatic Correspondent at the The Baltimore Sun, and quipped an iconic reply that many of us alive and aware at the time will remember:

Trehwitt: “Mr. President, I want to raise an issue that I think has been lurking out there for two or three weeks and cast it specifically in national security terms. You already are the oldest president in history. And some of your staff say you were tired after your most recent encounter [debate] with Mr. Mondale. I recall yet that President [John F.] Kennedy had to go for days on end with very little sleep during the Cuban missile crisis. Is there any doubt in your mind that you would be able to function in such circumstances?”

Reagan: “Not at all, Mr. Trehwitt, and I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth, and inexperience. If I still have time, I might add, Mr. Trehwitt, I might add that it was Seneca, or it was Cicero, I don’t know which, that said, ‘If it was not for the elders correcting the mistakes of the young, there would be no state.’”

The music hall erupted. Even the mediator and former Vice President Mondale laughed long and openly at the response. In spite of many serious issues that our nation faced in 1984, few might successfully argue that these were not lighter and more agreeable times.
