PORCELAIN PARADE FLAG STAND, MADE IN BRITAIN FOR THE AMERICAN MARKET
Dimensions (inches):
Description:
PORCELAIN PARADE FLAG STAND, MADE IN BRITAIN FOR THE AMERICAN MARKET: This is the only parade flag stand I have ever seen crafted of porcelain, which makes it highly unusual among the many existing examples constructed of wood and metal. Fired in four tiers, and joined with a brass rod, the stand is stamped on the underside with the following text: "ENGLAND" and "J.R. PALMENBERG'S SONS, NEW YORK" The stand was manufactured between 1885 and 1900 in Britain for the American market, specifically for this retailer, which was in business at 710 Broadway in New York selling "display items and fixtures". Raymond P., Emil T., and William F. Palmenberg were the sons of Vienna-born Joseph R. Palmenberg. They manufactured some of their own goods from a New York factory located at 89 and 91 West Third Street, yet obviously contracted goods from other makers. It could conservatively date a bit later, but I have not documented the existence of Palmenberg after 1901. Condition: Extraordinary. There is but a small flake on the edge of one of the holes at the top of the stand.
