PHILADELPHIA PORTRAIT OF TWO THOROUGHBREDS by CLARKSON, PHILADELPHIA,1860:
Portrait of two thoroughbred race horses in oil on canvas, by E. Clarkson, a listed Philadelphia artist. The work is signed in the lower corner, followed by "Phila." and the date "1860." Just one year prior to the Civil War and a rather early date for an American animal portrait. Clarkson is listed in the New York Historical Society.
The painting has been professionally cleaned and re-lined by one of New York's leading restorers. There is minor in-painting. I married the work to this ca 1830-1860 gilded molding, which is an excellent compliment. |
