PENNSYLVANIA REDWARE PLATE BY MEDINGER, SLIP-DECORATED WITH RARE IMAGE OF A HORSE:
This exceptional Pennsylvania redware plate, with rare yellow slip-decoration in the form of a horse, is attributed to Jacob Medinger, (op. 1880-1930), one of the last of the important Pennsylvania redware potters. This is likely an earlier example of his work, dating to the 1880-90 period. Medinger worked in Lancaster County. An essay entitled "A Maker of Pennsylvania Redware (Jacob Medinger), by Cornelius Weygandt, appeared in The Magazine Antiques in June of 1946.
Condition: There is a tiny rim flake in approximately the 8:00 position, accompanied by a chip in about the 8:30 position. This state is perfectly acceptable for redware, especially with such rare decoration. |
