PENNSYLVANIA JELLY CUPBOARD IN TOMATO RED PAINTED SURFACE, 1820-40
Dimensions (inches): 52" h x 42"w x 18"d
Description:
PENNSYLVANIA JELLY CUPBOARD IN TOMATO RED PAINTED SURFACE, 1820-40:

A nice, early, Pennsylvania preserve cupboard with two-drawer over one-door arrangement, a gently scalloped skirt and swag bootjack feet. This particular style, with a single door having one-over-two panel configuration and plank sides, is suggestive of the rural Lehigh Valley. The tomato red paint has both exceptional color tone and beautiful early surface. This is a ca 1840-1880 paint over a darker, original red.

The construction of Lehigh Valley furniture often includes an array of features that are finer than those commonly seen in other rural areas of the state. In this case they include a dovetailed case, incised beading, deep chamforing on the interior of the recessed door panels, and nippled mushroom knobs on the drawers. The wood is pine and poplar, assembled with a combination of tongue and groove mortising and forged nails.

I have always preferred open cupboards over chests of drawers for the storage of folded clothes. Jelly cupboards are excellent not only for that purpose, but for the storage of glassware, towels, linens, books, and pantry items. From a utilitarian standpoint, they are useful in any room.

Condition: The two pieces of molding that flank each side of the top are replacements. Various expected losses and repairs a present, a result of regular farm use and exposure to Pennsylvania farm environment. The cupboard is sturdy and usable.
