PENNSYLVANIA HUTCH TABLE IN BLACK PAINT WITH OUTSTANDING SURFACE, ca 1850:
Small scale Pennsylvania hutch table with original, black paint and in original, untouched surface that displays beautiful, thick crazing. The form is particularly pleasing with a rounded-corner, rectangular top and half-moon, boot-jack feet.
Hutch tables were particularly versatile in early American homes, because they allowed for food preparation, eating and working space, yet their tops rotate upward so they conveniently convert to a bench for additional seating. The top is fastened by pins through battens on its underside to four uprights. The removal of two of the pins permits the top to be swung up upon the remaining two. Since houses lacked modern heat, the bench could be turned toward the hearth with the plank top behind to block against drafts while at the same time reflecting heat from the fire. Many also had built-in storage, like this one, which has a hinged seat to reveal a shallow box underneath.
