PENNSYLVANIA HANGING PIE SAFE IN OLIVE GREEN PAINT WITH HEX SYMBOL PUNCHING, 1850-70:
Pennsylvania hanging pie safe, circa 1850-1870, with outstanding punched tins that run completely around the case. The doors display traditional Pennsylvania German hex symbols, flanked by other circular designs. On each side are large fans made of concentric rings, surrounding a small circular pattern with three consecutive wreaths. On the back are two, large, six-pointed stars within circular medallions.
The dark olive green paint is a second 19th century surface, applied over the original green. The combination of form and color are simply beautiful. While constructed to hang from the ceiling, Pennsylvania pie safes like this one can be stood on the ground and used as a low cupboard.
Condition: Some minor tin damage and paint loss. Some wood loss on the ears and one replaced. Sinners are original, but were at some point relocated below the original porcelain knobs. |
