PENNSYLVANIA BUCKET BENCH IN APPLE GREEN PAINT, 1820-1865:
Among surviving Pennsylvania bucket benches, this is a gem. The simple form features plank sides with serpentine scrollwork at the top over half-moon, bootjack feet. There are two shelves, each of which is wedged firmly in place by triangular molding above and below. But the best feature is the early, translucent, apple green painted surface over and earlier blue-green, which is superb and untouched.
Made sometime between 1820 and the Civil War from pine boards with square-nailed construction, the frame is especially sturdy. The edges of the planks are painted on the reverse, which is both unusual and aids with versatility of placement in a room. A 9-out-of-10 among its counterparts, this example is especially impressive in person and great for the display of a collection.
Condition: Excellent overall with only modest, expected wear. |
