Paint-decorated, Pennsylvania blanket chest, probably of Lancaster or York County origin. Made circa 1830-1850, the turned, Sheraton feet and molded edge of the top are painted chrome yellow. The case, which has the same yellow as an undercoat, is sponged in orange with opposing, stylized fans. The six-board, wide plank construction is of poplar with hand-dovetailed joinery. There is a lidded glove box or till on the interior, mortised into the case and crafted in an unusually fine manner, with molded edges along the top and base. The lid of the till operates on a wooden peg style hinge. The cast hinges of the blanket box itself are original.
Generous in scale, this wonderful, clean, and colorful chest, in great condition and with less than expected wear, is a beautiful example of Pennsylvania German painted furniture of the early 19th century. |
