Description:
PATRIOTIC QUILT WITH FOUR 15 STAR FLAGS SURROUNDING A RED, WHITE, & BLUE LONE STAR, PROBABLY MADE TO CELEBRATE 100 YEARS OF KENTUCKY:

Patriotic quilt made of pieced cotton and cheesecloth, with four American national flags that flank what is known as a "Lone Star" or "Star of Bethlehem" pattern. The construction of the quilt strongly suggests Southern origin. Because someone went to the trouble to make sure that the flags all had 15 stars and because some of the fabrics date distinctly to the 1890's, I have every reason to believe that the quilt was made in Kentucky for the state's centennial in 1892. While it is possible that the star count was merely convenient, due to the forced placement of the stars in three of the four blue cantons, that seems highly unlikely.

Though the piecework and quilting are crude, as is the case with many Southern quilts, the graphics are dynamic. In addition to the more obvious features, note the red bars at the top and bottom of the design, which pull all the elements together and lend an edgy, contemporary feel to this 19th century object; a bold and patriotic example of Southern American folk art.

Condition: There is some light foxing and staining throughout, and some minor repairs to unraveling of the piecework, but patriotic quilts are their own animal. Due to their rarity and the greater scope of interest in collecting them (among folk art and flag collectors who may not have an interest in other types of quilts), perfect condition isn't required.
