PATRIOTIC PAINTING ON COPPER WITH THE PRIMARY ELEMENTS OF THE GREAT SEAL OF THE UNITED STATES, ca 1845-65:
This patriotic American painting on a shield-shaped sheet of copper may be a large hat plate. It features a stately federal eagle bearing the elements present on the Great Seal of the United States. Above is a version of the traditional 13 stars in a 6-pointed Great Star fashion on a light blue ground within a sunray medallion. The style of the eagle is early-mid-19th century and the plate is probably of that period. Very finely executed, it's a elegant patriotic object.
Mounting: The solid walnut molding has ebonized decoration and a gilded liner and dates to the period between 1860 and 1880. The plate has been hand-stitched with monofilament to a background of 100% cotton twill. Spacers keep the object away from the glazing, which is U.V. protective glass.
Condition: Very minor dents an losses. |
