PATRIOTIC AMERICAN TOY DRUM WITH OPPOSING FLAGS, PROBABLY SPANISH AMERICAN WAR ERA (1898)
Dimensions (inches): 7.5" tall x 9" diameter
Description:
PATRIOTIC AMERICAN TOY DRUM WITH OPPOSING FLAGS, PROBABLY SPANISH AMERICAN WAR ERA (1898):

This patriotic child's toy snare drum was made sometime between the 1876 centennial of American independence in 1876 and the Spanish-American War (1898). Examples like this with pressed tin shells are known that bear patent dates closer to the latter period, but production may have begun earlier and these drums were produced by a variety of toymakers. The bands of this example appear to be made of ash and have a pressed geometric pattern comprised of intersecting, elongated hexagons and diamonds. Tension is supplied by braided cotton cord passed through lead loops with hooks. The heads are animal skin and there are gut snares. The vent hole has a brass escutcheon. There is no maker's mark or label.

The polychrome-painted decoration, in blue and red, includes opposing American flags with 13 stars arranged in 3-2-3-2-3 lineal patterns. The surface is nice and light wear contributes to its attractive appearance.

Condition: There are minor losses and scrapes. Minor repair to the cord was undertaken utilizing period material of the same kind. The skins have moderate water staining.
