PATRIOTIC AMERICAN TOY DRUM, 1876 CENTENNIAL - SPANISH AMERICAN WAR (1898) ERA
Dimensions (inches): 6.5" tall x 8" diameter
Description:
PATRIOTIC AMERICAN TOY DRUM, 1876 CENTENNIAL - SPANISH AMERICAN WAR (1898) ERA:

This patriotic child's toy snare drum was probably made at the time of the 1876 centennial of American independence in 1876, but could date as late as the Spanish-American War (1898). Examples with similarly decorated, pressed tin shells are known that are very similar in style and bear patent dates closer to the latter period, but the shell of this example is made of wood, probably birch or maple. The bands are made of oak or hickory and have a pressed, scrollwork pattern. Tension is supplied by braided rope with jute or hemp content, passed through lead loops with hooks. The heads are animal skin and there are gut snares. The vent hole has a brass escutcheon. There is no maker's mark or label.

The polychrome-painted decoration, in blue and red, includes a patriotic American shield in the center, flanked by American national flags on either side. All of this is surrounded by elaborate red scrollwork. The surface is excellent with wonderful craquelure. All-in-all a beautiful example of its kind.

Condition: The skins are broken; the top one much less-so than the bottom, but these are original to the drum and the state is expected for 19th century drums of all kinds, especially those used as toys. The rope has been tied and re-tied and has experienced some degree of minor loss.
