| Translucent, waxed paper bread wrapper, with a copyright date of 1915, from the Hammerschlag Mfg. Co. This was to adorn a loaf of "Sturm's Splendid Bread" and the firm was listed at 232-234 Greenwich St., New York City. The copyright appears at the top and bottom, printed in red and blue, respectively, but the best feature of this remarkable survivor is the vibrant, red, white, blue, and yellow graphics with balloons and exploding fireworks, flanked by stars and stripes. I have never before encountered a bread wrapper and extensive search yielded nothing whatsoever that was anything like it. It seems likely that this may have been a special wrapper produced for a patriotic occasion, such as Independence Day. Mounting: This is a pressure mount between U.V. protective plexiglass and 100% cotton twill that was washed and treated for color fastness. A length of white, archival tissue paper was placed behind the wrapper so that the graphics could be better viewed against the black ground. The mount was placed in a black-painted, hand-gilded and distressed Italian molding, to a molding with a scooped profile and a surface that is very dark brown in color, nearly black, with red undertones and highlights, was added as a liner. Condition: There are fold lines and tears, plus minor pigment loss, but the condition is rather remarkable, especially given that this appears to be the only one of its kind that has thus far entered the marketplace. It can presumed that either none, or next-to-none, were ever saved. |
