MASTERPIECE QUALITY PARADE FLAG HOLDER; THE BEST I HAVE EVER ENCOUNTERED, 1850-60:
Simply the best and the earliest parade flag holder that I have ever seen. Finely turned wood with original red, blue and gold paint and forged iron hardware signed "Wilder." Made ca 1850-60.
Parade flag holders were used to display small printed flags on staffs, either when for sale in a dry goods shop or as decorations for an event. Typically they are not much to look at on their own, but striking when filled with flags. This extraordinary example is a definite exception. It is so beautiful when empty that it can easily be hung alone as a piece of folk art. As an additional observation, it could be turned into a beautiful chandelier without alteration.
Condition: Excellent. Minor, expected wear. |
