PAINTING OF A MOURNING INDIAN NEXT TO A BURIAL SCAFFOLD, SIGNED AND DATED 1898:
An Native American burial scaffold is an unusual subject for a 19th century oil on canvas painting. This nicely executed and moving work, signed "H.S. Lukens '98", shows a morning Indian on a hillside, next to a scaffold with bean stalks growing up the poles at each corner, decorated with bright orange fabric and greenery. There is a clay offering pot underneath and the golden plain stands in stark contrast to the green scrub of the plateau.
Mounting: I married this work to an 1840-1870, American, gilded molding, with an especially nice profile, which I combined with a black-painted liner. |
