PAINTED AND GILDED DINING ROOM SIGN FROM A STEAMBOAT ON THE FALL RIVER LINE (NEW YORK TO BOSTON), 1847-1870:
Paint-decorated sign from a steamboat on the Fall River Line, which ran from New York to Boston. The trip was a combination of locomotive and sea travel. Passengers boarded a steamer on the Hudson River dock in Manhattan and passed through Narragansett Bay to Fall River, Massachusetts via the Long Island Sound. There they boarded a train for the remainder of the journey. For many years it was the preferred method of travel between the two cities and its steamboats were among the most advanced and luxurious of their time.
The sign is greeted passengers when they entered the formal dining room of one of the boats. Measuring four feet in length, the arched form is both unusual and very attractive. The whimsical gilded letters are expertly hand-carved, as are the center drop with its carved shell. There is a carved rope border and the perimeter of the wooden plank is fancifully adorned with gilded spheres along both top and bottom. The back has red paint and is decorated with hand-painted scrollwork.
The Fall River Line began operation in 1847 and the sign could certainly date to its origin. At the latest its is 1870-1880, but an earlier date is more likely.
