Description:
Carved and painted shelf in the form of the side profile of the head of an American Indian chief. The shirt and headdress have a yellow background and are elaborately decorated in multiple colors, including salmon red, green and black. There are roses along the edge of the shelf. The shirt and headband have designs made mostly through stipple painted dots to produce both floral and geometric patterns. Note the large stylized ferns and stylized tulip in between. Note also the exceptional early surface. The hardware on the reverse is a keyhole from a metal lock that was turned upside-down and thus re-purposed, affixed over a recess with upholstery tacks. Made circa 1890.
