Description: |
|
This paint-decorated, Pennsylvania document box, made sometime during the 1830 - 1850 period, has uncommonly beautiful form, with applied ogee bracket feet and many applied moldings in step-down profile. When it was discovered, the color was entirely black, but a careful cleaning revealed a rich ink blue ground, trimmed out with wide black bands and tomato red pinstriping. The black and blue coloration is highly unusual and the form is nothing short of exceptional. A masterpiece of both fine Pennsylvania cabinetry and folk art. |
