Outstanding 19th century American chess board in its original, untouched paint surface. A first quality collector example. Note how the thickness of the plank [almost 1 3/4"] and the finely molded edge, and the outstanding bittersweet paint and carriage-decorated trim sets it firmly apart from its numerous counterparts of lesser statue. Circa 1850-1880.
