I am not sure I have ever seen a Parcheesi board with a bright orange painted background. The attractive, bold color is just part of the appeal of this 5-color example, which includes scarlet red, turquoise, green, and white. The board is decorated in an unusual manner with elements that include circular medallions with intersecting squiggle lines. These might represent the feather-like portion of seed pods or the heads of some type of flower. In any event they are unusually abstract and whimsical.
This is one of a group of known, 19th century game boards that were either made in a cottage industry setting or by an independent craftsman. They are collectively known as "snowflake boards" among some game board collectors, due to the white, 6-pointed, snowflake-shaped stars that appear in its center. This element is common to the other known examples from this maker, some of which have more of them incorporated into the overall design.
Painted on a wooden plank with molded trim. The reverse is checkers and chess, though plain and wholly unlike the front. An outstanding example. |
