ODD FELLOWS CEREMONIAL GAVEL, MADE FOR A PHYSICIAN IN TEXAS, PRESENTED TO A TEXAS LODGE IN 1888:
This beautifully carved and finished presentation gavel is covered in symbols of the Odd Fellows fraternity. These include the chain with three links (friendship, love and truth), the all-seeing eye of God, an axe, the bow of Rebekah, a heart-in-hand, a snake wrapped around a staff, the scales of justice, a globe, and other imagery. Its decoration includes text that documents its origin and the lodge to which it was given. It reads: "Made by William Nichols of Kas. [Kansas] & presented by Dr. W.H. Trollinger to B.F. Christianson Lodge No. 102, IOOF [Independent Order of the Odd Fellows], Texas". The date "1888" is carved on the end of the handle.
Condition: Excellent, with only the most minimal wear. |
