NEW ENGLAND DRY SINK IN GREY PAINT WITH REMOVABLE WELL, POSSIBLE VERMONT ORIGIN:
This wonderful, diminutive dry sink has a very unusual, though quite practical feature in its removable well. This design is sometimes seen in Pennsylvania dry sinks, though it is a rare trait. But this example was found in New England, was purchased from a dealer/collector in Western Massachusetts, and it probably hails from that region. The low foot and boxy style suggests New England origin, as does its small size. Dry sinks are far more scarce in New England than they are in Pennsylvania, though they seem to have been particularly popular in Vermont as they are sometimes found in the close proximity. The translucent, oyster white-washed paint is a 19th century surface over what appears to be the original grey. Made circa 1840-1860. |
