Six-board, New England blanket chest, probably of Maine origin, with, reverse sweetheart, bootjack ends and a simple, yet extremely beautiful, applied, swag skirt that terminates in wide, scalloped feet. About the lid is an applied, shaped molding that complements it well. Smallish in scale and beautifully proportioned, the surface is painted in an attractive ochre white, with a translucent, whitewash-like consistency, with brush strokes that contribute texture and exceptional, early patina.
Made of pine, circa 1790-1820, the construction is mortised and square nailed. The original hinges appear to have likely been of the snipe style, cotter pin variety. At some point, mismatched, cast iron hinges were added, then moved, with leather applied to the original positions. There is a lidless till to the left-hand side.
The overall presentation is very much early New England at its best, simultaneously artistic and austere.
