1844 NEOCLASSICAL FOLK PORTRAIT OF A CAT
WITH A LOCOMOTIVE:
Signed "Maren" and dated 1844, this beautiful folk portrait of a cat in oil on canvas is in a very unusual format for an animal painting. The neo-classical background has an open door instead of an open window, and there is a freight train on the wooded landscape. The cat has a great expression. Note the very early form locomotive that looks more like a modern tractor with a thin, tall smoke stack. Maren is probably the name of the cat as opposed to the artist.
Of English origin, married to this English, Bird's Eye Maple frame with an ogee profile and excellent figuring.
Condition: Cleaned, relined and re-stretched. |
