Description: |
|
Iroquois Indian beaded whimsy, made in upstate New York, in the Niagara Falls region. Dated 1909, pieces such as this were produced by Native Americans for the tourist trade. Executed on leather, with a polished cotton back, the beads spell out the date and the message “Good Luck.” Bullion (metal) sequins are interspersed within the numbers and letters. The bright, apple green color is especially attractive, as are the deep green cylindrical beads employed in the loops of the fringe.
Mounting: The solid walnut frame dates to the period between 1865 and 1885 and retains its original gold liner. We extended the back of this to create a shadowbox. The textile is hand-stitched to 100% hemp fabric. The glazing is U.V. protective glass.
Condition: Two lengths of the fringe were absent. We moved two lengths from for better balance, but all of the beads are original. |
