Iroquois Indian beaded whimsy, made in upstate New York, in the Niagara Falls region. Made sometime between approx. 1895 – 1915, in the shape of a horseshow, this is one of a variety of identified forms produced by Native Americans for the tourist trade. With a face of buff yellow cotton twill, and a polished cotton back, reddish-pink in color, the beads spell out the message “Good Luck” in amber, brown, aqua, great, and white. There is a brown and white flower-like medallion in the top center and brown sprigs at the bottom of each arm. The edges are trimmed in greasy yellow seed beads, which also appear with metallic bullion sequins, interspersed within the and letters. There is a loop style decorative fringe at the bottom of each arm, in white and grey, matching loops of aqua, green, and greasy yellow in the center, and a loop of white beads at the top for hanging.
Mounting: The solid walnut frame, with ebonized trim and a gold inner lip, dates to the period between 1870-1885 and retains its original, early surface. We extended the back of this to create a shadowbox. The textile is hand-stitched to 100% hemp fabric, ivory in color, with a twill weave. The glazing is U.V. protective glass.
Condition: There is minor fading and extremely minor soiling, but there are no serious condition issues. |
