ONE OF THE MOST GRAPHIC STEEPLE CHASE GAMES KNOWN TO HAVE BEEN PRODUCED DURING THE 19TH CENTURY, McLAUGHLIN BROS., NEW YORK, 1888:
"Derby" Steeple Chase game, made in 1888 by McLoughlin Bros. in New York City. This 1888 version of the game has splendid lithography with colors and graphics that arguably surpass any other steeple chase board game made during the 19th century. The game is constructed of paper over cardboard and wooden constructed boxes and retains the original spinner and wooden playing pieces.
McLoughlin Bros. was a publishing firm that began in 1828 and was active until 1920, at which point it was sold to Milton Bradley. Some of the most collected and valuable American game boards were produced by the McLoughlins.
Mounting: The lid and cased board have been recessed in a mount made from archival foam core covered in 100% cotton twill, black in color, which has been washed and treated to reduce and set the dye. The spinner and playing pieces were affixed to the backing with 100% clear silicone, which is acid-free. The wooden frame is simple and black in color. The front is U.V. protective acrylic.
Condition: Moderate, expected wear.
