This classic Pennsylvania water bench has hefty proportions and beautiful form. Excellent as a coffee table or for seating, the original painted surface is dry and untouched, in a color that one might call putty or ochre white. Made circa 1870-80, there is a single board top more than twenty inches wide, a skirt with pleasantly curved returns, and half-moon, bootjack feet. Sturdy splines keep the feet intact. The original construction is of cut nails, the lumber is five-quarter, and the piece is every bit as bold and sturdy as it appears.
Condition: Some round nails added for stability early on, probably in the 1890-1910 era. I carefully beveled the splines at each end to improve the flow of the design. |
