LONG PENNSYLVANIA WATER BENCH WITH TRIPLE-MORTISED CONSTRUCTION AND BEAUTIFULLY SCALLOPED LEGS, CA 1850:
This classic Pennsylvania water bench has the construction and form indicative of the mid-19th century. Long and narrow, the feet are beautifully scalloped and affixed to the top by way of a triple mortise. The particularly attractive profile is complimented by a combination of early, Spanish brown paint and nicely worn patina.
Made ca 1850, the skirt is attached with cut nails and diagonal braces are mortised on the back side and also nailed.
Condition: There is a small patch repair on the left side of the top, measuring about 1.5 x 2 inches. This was professionally done and is difficult to spot. Some nails were added over time. There are a couple of cracks in the top, but the bench is very sturdy. On a primitive, rural-made item like this, the presence of these small apologies is effectively mute. |
