LOCOMOTIVE INDIAN, FOUND IN UPSTATE NEW YORK, ca 1860-1890
Paint-decorated, locomotive Indian, found in the town of Dryden, New York (near Syracuse). This wonderful sheet iron figural retains its original paint and has outstanding, original surface. Such objects can easily be mistaken for weathervanes, but they instead served as hood ornaments on early steam engines. One of Robert Bishop's books on folk art (the quintessential text) actually includes a photo of a steam train Indian in use. A tremendous addition to any collection of American folk art. ca 1860-1890. |
