LIDDED & LINED SPLINT BASKET IN GREEN PAINT, LAST QUARTER 19TH CENTURY
Dimensions (inches): 13" tall, 18" diameter
Description:
Large splint basket with fitted, overlapping lid, lightweight and structurally akin to a feather basket, but wide-mouthed and relatively shallow in shape when compared with the typical feather basket form. The dark green painted surface is original and excellent. The interior is lined with very fine muslin, stitched in place, and the entire object, fabric and all, exhibits great patina. Cotton twine was tied at regular intervals around the rim of the lid for structural support. This was done in the period by the person who used it and thus adds to the piece rather than detracts. Probably made in the Northeastern United States during the last quarter of the 19th century.

Condition: There are two small losses in the bottom beneath the liner. There are a couple of tiny losses in the body. There is a 4.5-inch section of loss in the wrapping of the rim of the lid, and one small loss elsewhere along it. On the edge of the top there are a couple of small breaks. All of the above are old and patina-ed throughout. The overall condition and stability are great.
