"LEAPING BROOK TROUT" by SAMUEL A. KILBOURNE (1836 - 1881):
Painting of a leaping brook trout striking a yellow dry fly in its mouth by artist Samuel Kilbourne (1836-1881). Executed in oil on board, this colorful, 1860-1880 work is Kilbourne's signature image. The most famous of these was sold to the Orvis Company and served as their logo of sorts, appearing on the cover of Orivs catalogues for many years. Kilbourne's hand shows great skill with the lines of the fish. The picture is complimented nicely by the orange and red, sponge-decorated frame that dates to the same period or prior. The simple, poplar molding is mortised and pinned with an applied, beaded edge on either side and is of unusually fine quality. Both the frame and the work have great surface. Possibly of Pennsylvania origin.
Condition: Nice, fine craquelure. Professionally cleaned. |
