LADY'S ARROW-BACK ARM CHAIR WITH GAME BIRD DECORATION ON THE CREST RAIL AND ELEGANT CONSTRUCTION, PROBABLY NEW YORK STATE, CA 1840:
Unusually fine, lady's arrow-back arm chair, paint-decorated, made ca 1840, probably of New York State origin. The crest rail is adorned with a oval register that has a metallic gold painted background, on which a landscape is painted that features two quail on a green meadow with mountains behind, encircled by a decorative leaf and vine border. The chair is trimmed out with yellow striping and gold accents. The trio of arrow spindles on the back are fancifully shaped with painted leaf designs and a rondel above, on which there is a five-petal flower. The arms are turned and elegantly bent for a shapely profile and the horizontal spindles below the arrows have stripes to resemble bamboo. The back legs continue into the uprights and are finished with a mule ear or thumb-back. The seat is rush and there is a cross-rail between the turned legs in the front that has a bold diamond shape with a flat, painted face. The background is Spanish brown, all of the paint is original and the chair has excellent surface with a fine craquelured varnish throughout.
Game birds are a particularly unusual theme for paint-decorated American chairs. |
