Description:
LADDERBACK ARMCHAIR WITH LANDSCAPE PAINTINGS ON EVERY SLAT, PROBABLY NEW YORK:
This 18th century, American ladder-back armchair was colorfully decorated in the 3rd quarter of the 19th century. The embellishments consist of whimsical dots and geometric patterns on a white-painted background, plus Dutch-themed landscape paintings on its crest rail and all of its back slats. The chair was probably made in the Connecticut or Hudson River Valley and the landscapes are suggestive of Dutch-American influence and the work of the Hudson River artists. The construction and the condition are excellent. The form is large and the turnings above the crest rail are fine and shapely.
Condition: the rush seat was probably replaced at some point in its history, maybe in the late 19th century. These are no other condition issues worth mention.
