DYNAMIC, UNUSUAL KITE, MADE BY MARKS BROS., BOSTON IN THE WWI - WWII ERA (1918-45)
Dimensions (inches):
Description:
This strikingly visual object is the "Zimbo Tail-Less Kite" according to its original tag, which is mounted below it in the frame and includes brief instructions of assembly and use. 19th century imagery is the most distinctive feature of the fantastic star field on this fragile, paper item, made sometime during the first half of the 20th century by the Marx Brothers toy company in Boston, Massachusetts (probably ca 1918-1945, WWI-WWII era). The use of two sizes of stars is reminiscent of early flag bunting and atypical of 20th century patriotic goods. I have never before seen this example, probably because such kites were produced in a multitude of styles and seldom survived due of their very thin and disposable nature.

Mounting: This is a sandwich mount between 100% cotton and u.v. protective acrylic. The mount was placed in a black-painted, hand-gilded and distressed Italian molding.

Condition: The kite was affixed to its wooden cross support structure with acid-free ATG so it would better withstand framing. There are minor losses in the paper accompanied by minor tears and foxing, but the overall condition is rather remarkable.
