JEROME PARK STEEPLE CHASE GAME IN A BOOK BOXED CASE, WITH AN UNUSUAL, THREE-DIMENTIONAL SPINNER, McLOUGHLIN BROS., NEW YORK, 1885:
Jerome Park Steeple Chase game, made by McLoughlin Bros. in New York City, ca 1885. One of the most interesting board games I've encountered with splendid graphical presentation, due in part to its unusual, three-dimensional spinner with race horses and jockeys. The board itself is constructed of wood and cardboard and is four-sided. It folds to become a box that houses the necessary parts, and when it does it resembles a two-volume book. The ivory dice, wooden shakers, and parts for the spinner are housed in a small sliding cardboard box that is made to look like the stables at Jerome Park, which was located on Long Island. The overall presentation of the game together is profoundly graphic and is the most interesting of any I have owned.
Mounting: The book-box board and sliding cardboard box have been recessed in a mount made from archival foam core covered in 100% cotton twill, black in color, which has been washed and treated to reduce and set the dye. The spinner and accessories were partially recessed into the same backing and/or affixed with 100% clear silicone, which is acid-free. The deep, wooden, shadowbox frame is simple and black in color. The front is U.V. protective acrylic.
Condition: There is moderate wear with minor losses, accompanied by minor fading and warping. |
