Description:
"THE WORLD'S GLOBE CIRCLER" BOARD GAME GAMEBOARD, BASED ON JULES VERNE'S "AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS", 1890-1900:

Published in 1793, few other late 19th century novels so captured the interests of Americans as Jules Verne's "Around the World in 80 Days", in which a character named Phileas Fogg made and won a bet that he could circumvent the globe in that time frame

. On November 14th, 1889, a Pennsylvania-born writer for the "New York World", by the name of Elizabeth Jane Cochran, who nick-named herself Nellie Bly, set out to beat the fictional character's record. She submitted regular correspondence while on her trip and beat the record, returning to NYC in just 72 days, 6 hours, 11 minutes, and 14 seconds. Nellie Bly became so popular that all manner of merchandise was produced that bore her image.

This very graphic, ca 1890-1900 era lithographed board game gameboard is embellished with illustrations from the remarkable character's journey. Spaces show where she was on the voyage, twisting in a nautilus-type spiral, at the center of which is Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. Nellie Bly and Jules Verne are illustrated in the top left and right corners, respectively, while Nellie's ship and train are pictured in the lower corners.

Antique lithographed board games pair up fantastically with collections of wooden, paint-decorated game boards.

Mounting: The board has been carefully recessed into 100% cotton rag mat board, lined with 100% cotton, black in color, which has been washed and treated to reduce and set the dye. The frame is simple and black in color. The front is u.v. protective Plexiglas.

Condition: Expected edge wear.
