Description:
DRAMATIC, CIRCULAR FLAG FAN OF UNCOMMONLY HUGE SIZE, WITH UNUSUAL CONSTRUCTION, MADE IN THE WWI ERA (1917-18):

This is, hands-down, the largest paper fan that I've ever encountered. Probably made ca WWI (1917-1918), likely in the orient for the American market, maybe for oriental dance. The construction is highly unusual. The stars are painted, probably vegetable stamped, and while the red stripes appear to be printed, in actuality they are made of crepe paper and applied to the heavy, off-white paper background.

Mounting: The fan has been stitched to 100% hemp fabric. A shadow box was created to accommodate it and increase its visual appeal. The black-painted, hand-gilded and distressed molding is Italian.

Condition: There were some tears. These were mended with archival tape from the reverse. The off-white paper has oxidized over time.
