  PLAINS INDIAN BEADWORK PURSE
Dimensions (inches):
Description:
PLAINS INDIAN BEADWORK PURSE:

A bold presentation of a red, orange, blue and green bell flower, flanked by two American flags with 9 cross-hatch stars and 10 stripes, serves as the central motifs of this Plains Indian beadwork purse. Made ca 1880-1900, the beadwork is executed on wool bunting. The edge of the mouth is trimmed in red wool bunting and the back of the bag and the strap are made of doeskin. It is interesting to note that the wool fabric was probably salvaged from an American flag, because wool bunting of this type was not commonly available to the public, having few uses outside that of commercial flag-making.

The presentation of the artwork is particularly striking, both in color and format, which makes this a more interesting example than most. The hand-made frame is modern, but has convincing, antiqued surface that compliments the purse.

Condition: Some losses along the binding.
