RARE PAIR OF NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN ANDIRONS, 1880-1910

Description:
RARE PAIR OF NATIVE AMERICAN INDIAN ANDIRONS, 1870-1890:

These beautiful and unusual andirons, in the form of American Indian braves, were found in Massachusetts. While unsigned, it is thought that these painted, cast iron examples might hail from a foundry in Plymouth, Mass., which was known to have produced such forms. Great detail in the castings and the original black paint is largely what makes them so attractive, but the dovtailed construction and thick, square, lateral bars where the logs would rest (heftier than usual), have nice surface from obvious use, and are also a plus.

Native Americans are a rare form among the andirions I have encountered at countless shows and auctions. While seemingly akin to the other figural examples that were popular in the early 20th century, such as the owls and cats with glass eyes, these appear to be earlier and better made.

Ca 1870-1890.
