Dimensions (inches): |
frame - 10.25" x 12.25", work - 7.25" x 9.25" |
Description: |
Patriotic Pennsylvania German scherenschnitte (paper cutting), with eagles and 15 star flags. Maybe Mahantongo Valley region; reminiscent of Isaac Stiehly, but not as detailed. The work looks to be around 1820-30, but the 15 stars on the flag may date it earlier (1792-1818). The early surface, tiger maple frame is original.
Condition: There is some staining and foxing, accompanied by some rippling, but the scherenschnitte remains in its original frame, intact, as-found, and is very early for this sort of work. |
