  WHIMSICAL TOY DOG, 1880-1910
Dimensions (inches): 7" w x 7" h x 3" d
This Steiff-type, printed wool and mohair, stuffed toy dog is one of the most folky and whimsical animals of its kind that I've ever seen. With it's crude stitching and rough-cut, unbound ears, one might expect that it was homemade, but that is not the case. This is a cottage industry made object and of a known variety. The maker's name is unknown, but others have surfaced. That said, it was certainly made by less-skilled hands and qualifies more as folk art than your traditional, mass-produced Steiff. Probably made in Germany for the American market, note the black and white, irregular spots that are more cow-like than dog-like, the fuzzy "socks", tail, and ears, and the quizzical, button eyes. A great addition to any folk-art-collecting dog lover.

Condition: Missing a small bow on it's chest that was affixed with a snap. The mohair is worn from the nose. Minor losses on feet. Minor foxing.
